New R&I project captures the SPIRIT of the post pandemic digital transformation

Martel’s Digital for Planet non-profit initiative kicks off SPIRIT

Martel’s Digital for Planet (D4P) non-profit initiative kicks off SPIRIT, the first D4P project that aims to reduce Europe’s CO2 emission with digital technologies.

The last few years have demonstrated how video conferencing tools improve interactions while working remotely, greatly impacting CO2 emission reduction thanks to the decrease in travel. However, staring at the tiny rectangle during a long online meeting can eventually become tiring and cause us to lose authentic human connection.

To address these issues, Martel joined a strong consortium that launched SPIRIT, a European Commission’s funded research and innovation project, winner of the Horizon Europe call HORIZON-CL4-2021-HUMAN-01-25.

Martel’s Digital for Planet non-profit initiative kicks off SPIRITOctober 20, 2022, marked the start of the project as it gathered eight partners from five different European countries with a common objective: to put real-time immersive telepresence into practice. The final goal is to increase Europe’s innovation capacity to achieve Europe’s climate-neutral targets. SPIRIT intends to take virtual interactions to the next level by creating a vivid 3D meeting experience using advanced eXtended collaborative telepresence technology.

Martel’s Digital for Planet completes a consortium that gathers top industry, SMEs as well as leading universities and research centres in the field of multimedia communication and VR/AR/XR technologies, such as Ericsson, Deutsche Telekom, Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications and the Universities of Surrey, to name a few.

Digital for Planet, Martel’s non-profit initiative, is thrilled to be a part of SPIRIT and collaborate with forward-thinking partners on Europe’s green and digital transformation. We believe that SPIRIT plays an important role in demonstrating the potential and positive impact that digital technology advancement can have on the sustainable development of our society”, said Dr Monique Calisti, CEO of Martel and President of Digital for Planet.

The Digital for Planet team will support the fine-tuning of SPIRIT results by managing a series of Open calls for stakeholders and professionals in multiple vertical sectors. In addition, Digital for Planet will support the overall impact creation and outreach activities by planning and implementing targeted communication and dissemination activities to maximise the visibility of the project.
