The Horizon Europe official launch event is hosted by Portugal which currently holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The Horizon Europe Programme started on 1 January 2021 and is the EU’s most ambitious R&I framework programme ever and the largest transnational programme of its kind worldwide, with a budget of €95.4 billion.

The Portuguese Presidency is leveraging the Horizon Europe official launch event to focus on three main issues identified as crucial to provide the European Research Area with more coordination and to encourage Member States to create synergies between their R&I investment and Horizon Europe, shared in a background note in preparation of the event:

  • The science-employment-resilience relationship to foster recovery in Europe.
  • Open and collaborative research to break through the frontiers of knowledge.
  • Fostering research careers and increasing the professionalisation of research activities in the public and private sectors, and making research careers more attractive for women and minorities.

Highlighted topics for discussion by high-ranking delegates at the Horizon Europe official launch event include mobilizing synergies for Horizon Europe and NextGenerationEU together with national public and private investments for promoting green and digital transitions across all EU regions in the renewed European Research Area as well as preparing a resilient recovery.
